We are frustrated by many responsive web designs that don't maintain any traditional sense of layout. They are downright ugly and confusing.

Conversely, non-responsive sites only shrink. This makes them harder to read on smaller devices.

We have tried to balance reasonable layout with responsive design. This site responds based on a browser's view port, but we enforce fixed design with each view.

To accomplish the design we wanted, we started with a Bootstrap framework, Google fonts, and added custom JavaScript and styles to adjust the site responsiveness. Rather than just center and resize content, we step everything down in small, medium and large increments. This allows us to keep balanced layouts at different sizes.

We included little technology bits on our site to make it more fun and useful. It was also designed to be efficient and maintainable. Some of these include:

• project clocks
• leading edge news box
• Google maps

The project clock on our home page was designed to be a fun way to show people different projects we have completed around the world.

The 'leading edge' news box, also on the home page, links current postings to our site. It is simple, but flexible. You only see the screen while programs on our server update the links.

The Google Map on our Contact page uses an API, that allows us to use custom icons, highlight parking, and include directions to our office.

Most web sites include little 'eye candy' images to break up the page. They often have little to do with page content, and are simply there to give the reader a visual break.

We like technology, and the illustrations here are to remind us of the role of technology throughout history and our connection to it.
